The Sculptresses
Description
"The Sculptresses" is a performative archive of female connection and individuality. Following in the footsteps of 19th-century sculpture pioneers and the sisterhood that united them, the authors place their own bodies on a pedestal as objects of mutual creation. They publicly evoke the work of lesser-known international female artists, including Tola Certowicz, Hélène Bertaux, Antonina Rożniatowska, Maria Gerson-Dąbrowska, and Jadwiga Łubieńska. This is an invitation to experience sculpture through the lens of choreography. The dialogue- and rhythm-based duet is a continuous attempt to articulate the social status of female relationships. A live-formed, transpersonal bodily statue blends a sense of agency and (in)dependence, gymnastics and eroticism. The work was created at the invitation of the National Museum in Warsaw as an accompanying event to the exhibition "Without a Corset. Camille Claudel and Polish Women Sculptors of the 19th Century", curated by Ewa Ziembińska with curatorial collaboration by Alicja Gzowska.
Artist's/band's artistic biography
Weronika Pelczyńska and Magda Fejdasz are performers and choreographers based in Warsaw. Together with other artists, they practice sisterhood by initiating projects that embody this concept through performative arts and dance practices. They are interested in promoting a collective artistic vision while supporting individual voices.
Their recent works focus on commemorating women and the forms of their collaboration — including choreographers and sculptresses — and on recognizing their contributions to art history and the social archive. Practices of Sisterhood is a platform for women artists that challenges traditional authoritarian models of working, opening space for dialogue, co-presence, and collaboration.
